'It's been going on for quite some time' | Inside Ibex Street's history of homicides in Macon

The street has a history of violence, and has seen 5 shooting deaths in nearly 10 years.

MACON, Ga. — The Bibb Sheriff's Office says they responded to a shooting near the intersection of Ibex and Chappell streets Sunday night.

28-year-old Deundrae Gay was found dead at the scene from a gunshot wound. This is not the first shooting on Ibex Street.

Kenneth Riley says living on Ibex Street is not what he had imagined. Riley's lived here for nearly eight years, but he doesn't see the situation on Ibex Street getting better without some sort of intervention.

"It's been going on for quite some time," Riley said. "It's been a couple homicides that's been going on back there on Ibex Street."

In 2018, Bibb County Sheriff David Davis held a safety walk on Ibex Street after a house party turned deadly. 21-year-old Monterrius Dugger died from a gunshot wound.

At the time the sheriff's office said they received dozens of calls especially because of a "liquor house" where alcohol was sold illegally.

The walk was supposed to let the people in the area know the sheriff's office is there to protect them.

“Let the bad people know we're going to be watching them and to make a difference are we going to change this street with one walk on one afternoon no we are not, but it lets the neighbors know we're here for them,” Davis said.

Nearly a year later, 62-year-old Willie Green Smith Jr. was shot in the head on Ibex Street. Investigators and witnesses said there was an argument between Smith and his cousin over $20.

“People need to come together. But I don't see that happening,” Riley said.

Then violence plagued the area three years later when deputies responded quickly from a ShotSpotter tip but found 28-year-old Ormondo Cortez Clark dead from a gunshot wound.

After his death, the sheriff's office said they believed Clark's death was to help rival gangs get even, even though he wasn't in one.

His family is still looking for answers.

“I just kind of just sat there trying to see if it was real. Then it hit me, and I kind of went to pieces,” Debbie Clark said.

Riley says after living by so much violence, it's time for a change.

“It is the young folks. I mean, it's everybody you got, young and old but mainly young people doing the violent stuff,” Riley said.

The sheriff's office is still trying to piece together Sunday night's shooting. If you have any information, you're asked to call Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68crime.
