Friday night house fire creates billowing tower of smoke over Macon

The Bibb County Fire Department believes no one lived at the home and, right now, they don't know what started the fire.

MACON, Ga. — A small house fire right by Piedmont Macon created a thick tower of smoke that was visible near downtown Macon.

Macon-Bibb County Fire Chief Shane Edwards said that the fire occurred at a small, singular-story house at 431 Astor Street, which is just off Emery Highway.

The fire shut down the intersection of Astor and Lexington Street as the fire department worked the fire.

Multiple fire engines were dispatched to the location to put out the blaze, and there were ambulances on the scene.

However, according to Edwards, no one was injured during the fire.

He described the building as "vacant." They believe nobody lived at the home and people at the business next door said they've never seen anyone living there.

According to John Gibson with the fire department, the fire was called to 911 at around 6:50 p.m. Friday evening.

They say the fire was never fully involved, however, he described the fire as "heavy" near the front of the building.

The house did not have any gas or power, Gibson said. Arson investigators were called in to assist with the investigation.

The billowing tower of smoke raised some alarms among some Maconites, especially considering its proximity to the Piedmont Macon Medical Center.

As of 7:30 p.m., the fire was already extinguished and Edwards says the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
