MACON, Ga. — We are in the middle of the Pride Month, and this Saturday, Macon is bringing the celebration to downtown.
Pride is a time for people to celebrate the LGBTQ community and all that they represent.
According to the Library of Congress,Pride is celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Greenwich Village.
This year is the 50th anniversary. Greenwich was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Volunteer organizer Demarcus Beckham says he wants Central Georgia's LGBTQ community to feel welcome at the event.
"We wanted to make sure it's very diverse and we're the cornerstone of the event. We wanted make sure every facet of the LGBTQ community was shown there, and we also wanted to make sure we had experience and that it could be a family experience," said Beckham.
The event is this Saturday on 3rd and Cherry Streets from 3 to 5 p.m. in downtown Macon.
