Prosecutors explain why charges were dropped in 2021 Macon murder

A man was found shot in the head at the Shadowood West apartments back in 2021. A suspect was arrested the next day, but last week, prosecutors dropped charges.

MACON, Ga. — Prosecutors dropped charges last Monday against a man accused of killing a man at a Macon apartment complex back in 2021, according to recent court filings.

Braylon Alexander Jones was arrested in the November 2021 shooting death of Cyrus Norwood, 30, at the Shadowood West Apartments.

When authorities arrived, they say Norwood was found shot in the head. Jones was arrested the next day on Arkwright Avenue.

But after being indicted in 2022 on murder and other charges, prosecutors have now dropped charges against Jones, but they’ve left open the door to bring charges again in the future.

Prosecutors with the Macon District Attorney’s Office filed a “motion to nolle prosequi”  last Monday, asking the judge to sign off on dismissing the murder case against Jones.

The same day, Judge Connie Williford signed off the motion, dropping charges against Jones.

According to the Macon District Attorney’s Office, the case against Jones was dismissed because witnesses were not cooperating and there was evidence at the crime lab that still needs to be tested.

But the order was filed “without prejudice,” which means that prosecutors can choose to bring charges against Jones in the future if they believe the evidence is there.

“The investigation is ongoing, and we remain committed to pursuing justice in this case,” the District Attorney’s Office said a statement. “Mr. Jones remains in jail on pending charges related to other incidents. If anyone has information about this incident, we encourage them to contact police.”

However, Jones does not have freedom yet. He is still in jail on charges related to other crimes, the district attorney's office says.

Norwood’s death is still under investigation. If you have any information, the DA’s Office encourages you to call law enforcement at 478-751-7500 or the Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
