Woman, 76, dies days after train hit vehicle in North Macon

Coroner Leon Jones says doctors declared her dead just after 11 a.m. Sunday.

MACON, Ga. — A woman is dead after a train struck her vehicle Friday.

According to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones, doctors declared Cheryl Rawls dead Sunday morning around 11 a.m.

Friday, a train struck Rawls' vehicle at the train crossing at Forsyth Road and Tucker Road at around 2:35 p.m.

The sheriff's office says the train's crossing gate hit the vehicle, trapping the 76-year-old driver in the vehicle.

They say Rawls was not able to get out of the train's path before the train hit her.

The woman was taken to the hospital where she later died.

The collision is currently under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at 478-751-7500.

This is a developing story. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
