'We'll try to find a spot for you' | Bibb County Election Supervisor talks election staffing

They say they are good on staffing for now, but they’d like to have another 50 or so for the upcoming May and November elections.

MACON, Ga. — Since 2020, there has been a national shortage in election poll workers. On March 12, people here in Central Georgia will vote for the Presidential Primary

On Election Day, entry-level clerks make $100, assistant poll managers make $140, and poll managers make $200.

March 8 was the last day for early voting, and according to the Bibb County Board of Elections, Bibb County has about 300 poll workers.

They say they are good on staffing for now, but they’d like to have another 50 or so for the upcoming May and November elections.

They're calling all workers who are willing to help.

Thomas Gillon is Bibb County's Board of Elections supervisor.

“We'd love to hear from you and we'll try to find a spot for you," Gillon said. "We'll be happy to take any applications we get."

Gillon said having the extra help along with the extra smiles makes elections season easier. The voters also have that extra help and support.

“We've had poll workers work for decades before and we're always happy to see them come back,” Gillon said. “We're also happy to see the new poll workers come in, but having the people there who've seen it all, they know there's always going to be a few new changes."

Cynthia Jones has been an election official for over five years. She says they're calling all workers just like her who are willing to help and serve these voters.

“I feel like it's my civic duty,” Jones said.

Jones said seeing younger and older voters come out to the polls to cast their ballots is inspiring, and she's excited to help any time she can.

"Our camaraderie in our community, people when they come in we say thank you for coming, we're glad to see you, don't forget the next election, all those things really make a difference,” Jones said. We're encouraging them to keep striving and it's their right that they've earned to vote so we want everybody to take advantage of it."

Patricia Johnson has been an election official for over 10 years.

“Whenever you need us, we’re here for you to serve your needs,” Johnson said.

Johnson mentioned taking the time to chat with the voters is what expands her experience and she looks forward to the diversity of people she works with.

"It's not an age thing,” Johnson said. “You're not too old, not too young, and we're here to help any way we please. You see things going on in your community and if you have a chance to vote on it and voice your opinion, do so.”

You can apply to become a poll worker on the Board of Elections website.

The General Primary Election is on May 21 and the General Election is on Nov. 5.
