MACON, Ga. — Genevea Harvey is trying to get more answers into why her dad, Jesse Harvey was delayed a wellness check.
Harvey says her dad was a musician and a smart man. She says they didn't have the closest relationship growing up, but she always checked up on him when she was older.
She says she wishes people could hear the gospel music he created. Now, they never will and she blames managers at Vineville Christian Towers for not finding him sooner.
"Haven't talked to him since July 23," Harvey said. "I have been calling, calling, calling, and calling. 'I need you all to do a wellness check, this is not like him.'"
Harvey says her dad never lets his phone die and if he misses a call, he calls back. She said the last time she heard from him was on July 23 to ask about mail.
She said when she called to check on him days later, it was unusual. She says she called her brother, and her kids and they hadn't heard from him either. After five days, she called the manager's office at the Vineville Christian Towers.
"I didn't get any response that day," Harvey said. "I call back on Monday, no response. I called back on Tuesday. no response. I left messages."
Eight days later on Aug. 7, her brother called and asked why they hadn't answered or gone to check on their dad. When a manager called back that same day, they told the family their dad had passed away.
Leon Jones says Jesse Harvey is one of six people since July 2 whose death went undiscovered for days because no one checked on them. Jones' message? Check on your neighbors.
"Look for the telltale signs, especially a house," Jones said. "If the car ain't been moved and the grass is knee high, and that year it was 99% well manicured, something is wrong."
Harvey says she has lots of questions about her dad's death.
"We don't know what happened in his last hours, seconds, minutes. We don't know and we are going to forever not know," Harvey said.
She says her dad always told her when he was gone to be the glue to keep the family together but she says right now, her family is falling apart. She says the complex needs to do better about checking on seniors who live there.
"They need to do something about that because anyone over the age of 65, even though they're not living somewhere assisted, come on now," Harvey said. "Somebody needs to be checking on these people. Y'all got social workers there, what are they doing?"
