Macon woman sentenced to 20 years for shooting teen in head

Cannon pleaded guilty to shooting a teen in the head last January after he allegedly threw rocks at her Bloomfield home.

A Macon woman who pleaded guilty to shooting a teen in the head last January was sentenced to 20 years on Wednesday -- 15 in a state penitentiary and five on probation.

At her sentencing, prosecutors played back voicemails left at the Macon-Bibb mayor’s office, as well as showed body camera footage from Bibb deputies’ prior experiences with Cannon before the shooting.

After she entered her guilty plea on March 26, District Attorney David Cooke said, ‘it’s going to be a long road to recovery’ for Vernon Marcus.

On Wednesday, Marcus’ mother testified that the brain injury her son sustained when Cannon shot him in the head left him unable to speak and left ringing in his ears.

Prosecutors also said Cannon’s daughter testified that the teens Cannon shot at never threw rocks at their Bloomfield home, which contradicts Cannon’s claim that she shot at them because they were throwing rocks at her home and car.

Cannon testified that she always intended to shoot at the ground, not at the teens, and that she regrets what happened.
