MACON, Ga. — The Macon Violence Prevention (MVP) program set out some time for dads to spend some extra time with their kids.
MVP, alongside Macon Mental Health Matters, held an Ice Cream with Dads event at the playground pavilion in Amerson River Park from 12 to 3 p.m.
"We want to bring fathers and their children out for a fun afternoon together, and to grow closer together as families," Jonathan Barton, one of the organizers, said.
Both MVP and Macon Mental Health Matters invited all dads, grandfathers and male guardians to enjoy sweet treats for sale with their children.
Around 200 people came out to the event
Macon Water Ice provided the treats for the event. There was also a game truck onsit eand childrens books were given away.
Dads and kids were also able to enjoy their time on a local playground.
Ice Cream with Dads is an event held around the country by The Active Dad organization. There is also an event happening in Atlanta.
The Active Dad organization holds regular online meetings of father and father figures to discuss issues they face, learn of solutions and find support. You can find more information about them here.
Ultimately, all three organizations just wish to improve men's mental health and the relationship between parent and child.
"We found through our Men's Mental Health Meet-ups that many dads face the same insecurities, issues, and successes with their children, and that each was looking for ways to make sure they were the best fathers they could be," Jeremy Grissom, MVP Coordinator, said. "With this event, we can bring dads together to talk and watch their children play."
