MACON, Ga. — Folks in Macon today had the chance to get some exercise Saturday morning at the Macon Music half marathon.
It was hosted by the Macon Tracks Running Club along with Visit Macon, Macon-Bibb County, and Presenting Sponsor Atrium Health Navicent.
The race was the first of its kind in 20 years, with over 570 runners from 13 states.
In a release for the run, Mayor Lester said "What a great response for our first half marathon; I know people will thoroughly enjoy the tour of our musical heritage and learning about why we're such a great community. One of the things people told me they wanted in our community was more opportunities for recreation, and this race – along with the new indoor pickleball facility and sporting events – have helped put us on that path."
The race started in Carolyn Crayton park at 8 a.m., and runners had the chance to jog by many historic locations that celebrated Macon's musical heritage, like the Big House, the Grand Opera House, Capricorn Studios, Mercer's McDuffie Center for Strings, Vineville Academy, and more.
One runner, Doug Pearson, said in preparation for he run he added a mile each weekend leading up to the race, and the final distance traveled was 13.1 mi.
Runners ended the race back in Carolyn Crayton park, where times were recorded and medals were given out.
