'Wonderful partnership' | Macon organization donates 40 bikes to the top readers of Bruce Elementary

The 100 Black Men of Macon Middle Georgia donated 40 bikes and helmets to the top readers from each homeroom.

MACON, Ga. — The students at Bruce Elementary in Macon have gotten some early Christmas cheer.

The 100 Black Men of Macon Middle Georgia donated 40 bikes and helmets to the top readers from each homeroom.

The kids ran to claim their bikes and their parents followed, proud of their accomplishments.

Not only did these kids receive a new and much-deserved bike, but they also learned about bike safety from Bike Walk Macon.

Macon-Bibb County Manager Keith Moffett is a chair member of 100 Black Men of Macon Middle Georgia's Education Committee. He says he just wants to help a child be a child while encouraging them to achieve their goals.

"We kind of supplement the teaching that the wonderful staff here at Bruce Elementary does," Moffett said. "They teach the kids, we just want to inspire the love of reading so every month we come up with incentives for them, it also works towards their attendance, trying to increase their attendance, increase their love of reading and it's just been a wonderful partnership."

Allure Browne is in 5th grade at Bruce Elementary. She said she already had a bike on her Christmas list, so this was a surprise to her and her family.

"I feel really excited," Browne said. "I value the community and Bruce is one of the best schools in my opinion. They do so much for us and the teachers are pretty cool."

Bruce Elementary also has a new reading and mentoring program to promote reading and literacy skills for the kids of Central Georgia.

"Just another great day spreading some Christmas cheer and what kid doesn't love a new bike?" Moffett said.
