MACON, Ga. — To honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., community members in Macon kicked off their annual city wide march on Monday.
Hundreds of Central Georgians began at four different locations and marched over two miles to Macon City Hall for the event.
"It's something that I personally look forward to every year," said Union Baptist Church Rev. David Stanley. "I've seen rain. I've seen cold. I've seen warm weather... I'm ready to go."
Stanley has participated in the march for over 30 years and his favorite part has always been the sense of community.
"It's about love, fellowship, togetherness," said Stanley. "To see so many people coming out, black and white, joining hands, fellowshipping, excited... It's just an exciting time."
Fellow marcher Brione Rozier wants to pass down the tradition down to her children. Rozier marched along with her three daughters.
"I got up this morning and I was so grateful for the life of Dr. King," said Rozier. "I feel like there's a sense of gratitude for everything he did in his life for our life today. I really wanted to share that with my children."
Stanley also believes that younger generations should keep the marching tradition strong.
"It's important for us to keep this march alive so that children, who now have it made in a lot of ways, will understand what it's all about," said Stanley.
