MACON, Ga. — CORRECTION: This story originally said Davis planned to move out of his neighborhood after the shooting. Davis tells 13WMAZ that he was already planning to move before the shooting occurred.
Blade Davis has lived in Macon most of his life.
He considers the city his home, but a recent shooting in his neighborhood has him concerned.
Late Friday night, Davis was sleeping when he was woken up by seven or eight gunshots near his home in the Baconsfield neighborhood.
With seven kids and a wife, he was afraid the shots were in his front yard because of how loud the sound was. He got up, looked out the window and saw two people walking around in front of his and his neighbor's home.
He immediately called 911.
"The dispatcher indicated to me that she knew that there was a unit already in our neighborhood and that they could be here relatively quickly," Davis said.
While he was on the phone, he went outside to make sure there were no other bullet holes in his car or around the home.
Davis says while he was checking, he saw a car pick up the two people and drive off. When the car came back, Davis says he and his neighbor hid behind a tree to stay safe.
"It turned out that it was a good thing that we did, because the car opened fire," he said.
Davis says he called 911 for a third time. This time the dispatcher asked him if he wanted a deputy to come out to his home. He found the question laughable.
"I asked the dispatcher on the phone, in what world would you have shots fired at you and not want police to be dispatched," Davis said.
Davis and his neighbor discussed what had happened while they waited for a Bibb County deputy to arrive. They found shell casings in front of their yard.
Five minutes later, the deputy arrived. Davis says the deputy told him he was the only deputy working in the east Macon district.
Davis asked the deputy how many officers were working county-wide that night. He told him around eight deputies were working.
13WMAZ reached out to the Bibb County Sheriff's County to request records on staffing that night and the 911 transcript. We are still waiting on the numbers.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are almost 160,000 people who live in Macon-Bibb County. Davis says he was in disbelief when he heard the number of deputies working on a Friday night.
"There's no care or concern if your police force is not strong," Davis said.
Davis says the Bibb County Sheriff's Office needs to be beefed up for the community's safety and the deputies' safety too.
We did reach out to Bibb County Sheriff's Office for comment as well. We are still waiting for a response.
