A Macon man will serve over a decade in federal prison for fentanyl trafficking, prosecutors say

When authorities attempted to search his car, they say he jumped into the driver seat and attempted to flee.

MACON, Ga. — A Macon man was sentenced to 18 years in prison for trafficking fentanyl after a 2023 traffic stop, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Georgia.

Federal prosecutors say Antonio Jenord Whitehead, 37, was sentenced to federal prison Wednesday along with five years of supervised release. He previously pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl on April 3.

Back in February 2023, Whitehead's car was stopped on Georgia Highway 401 by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the press release said. On top of having a suspended license, they say the deputy also smelled drugs.

The deputy then called for backup and then conducted a search of the vehicle.

That's when prosecutors say Whitehead jumped into the driver seat and attempted to flee, but an officer shot out the vehicle's rear tires and arrested him.

After a search of the vehicle, they found almost half a pound of fentanyl, 1.25 pounds of methamphetamine and a little under a quarter of a pound of cocaine, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

They also say that Whitehead had several bags of marijuana and a bag of fentanyl on him as well.

Whitehead told authorities that the driver of the vehicle had nothing to do with the drugs that they found, the earlier press release said.

But it also wasn't Whitehead's first encounter with the law. The U.S. Attorney's Office says Whitehead was on supervised release for two drug distribution convictions out of West Virginia.
