MACON, Ga. — In the 1970s, the Macon Mall owned the title as the state's largest mall. Now, it's a ghost town.
Jessica Hunley, "It's, like, empty. You have a big ol' place with a full mall, and it's like, empty."
For two decades, the Eisenhower Parkway neighborhood watched as stores moved or closed permanently.
Several stores at the Eisenhower Crossing shopping center sit vacant with "for lease" signs posted out front.
Stores at the Macon Mall saw a similar fate.
Samantha Robertson says, "There's only like 4 stores in this mall."
PetSmart, David's Bridal, Michaels, JC Penney, Dillards, and many others parted ways with west Macon.
On Monday, Macy's, one of the few remaining Macon Mall stores, announced they will close.
"I guess when I order, I have nowhere else to go except Southlake now," says Covea Robertson.
Some Macy's customers assume this is another ripple effect of the Shoppes at River Crossing opening as the "new mall" in 2008.
Robertson says, "When it opened, they allowed so many other stores that we already had here to then take root and go to the other side of town."
