MACON, Ga. — Construction workers had to clean up leftover paint and glass after vandals struck a community building owned by the Macon Housing Authority.
It happened Wednesday night on Main Street, but they say this isn't the first time.
They walked in and saw spilled paint, busted glass, cut wires and more.
The construction workers were expected to finish within the next few weeks, but now it'll take longer and they estimate damage at over $100,000.
Construction workers have been working on the Macon Housing Authority's Family Investment Center for the past two years.
Joshua Hester is the project manager for Fyffe the construction company.
He said when he walked in and noticed everything vandalized, there was no theft but lots of damage.
"It's definitely not a good feeling to come in to see all your hard work being vandalized and destroyed knowing you have to start right back over," Hester said. "It's not a rare occurrence for us to come back from a weekend off and come in and something be vandalized or stolen."
He says he enjoys working with the housing authority to revitalize the area, so vandalizing their hard work once again is tough to see.
"This will basically be like a building for the community to come and have activities and stuff like that around and to see someone from that same community come in and vandalize it, I hate to see it."
Wylie Brewer, the lead electrician, said it's disheartening to see the damages.
"It's just going to take more time to complete it, it's going to cost more money because we have to pay more people to pick all this up, clean it up and probably some of this is just going to have to be replaced and that's even more money," Brewer said. "We're just going to have to clean this up and start over again. It'll set us back a few days and a lot of money. We were almost done here but now we have to take quite a few steps back."
Now, they say this is a call to the community to say something if they see something.
"I just want to send a message to the community and say please just let us finish our job," Hester said. "We're here trying to restore this for the community, trying to help fix Macon up a little bit."
We saw damage at the same site in September when thieves broke windows, kicked in doors, cut locks and wires and stole equipment.
Hester says he's contacted the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.
We've reached out to them and they say deputies responded and a report has been taken. The incident is still under investigation.
