Macon crews battle apartment fire

At 5 a.m., the roof was nearly gone.

UPDATE: 8 a.m.

At 8 a.m. Friday morning, crews had completely put out the fire.

UPDATE: 7 a.m.

Macon-Bibb Fire Chief Marvin Riggins says the fire started in the back side of the apartment and then spread across the roof.

Crews are still working to figure out the cause of the fire.

People who live there say they started smelling smoke around 3 a.m. Friday morning. Everyone who lived in the apartments got out safely and are all accounted for.

At 7 a.m. on Friday, crews were still on scene putting out small spot fires as the building cools down.

At the height of the fire, there were ten crews on scene fighting the flames. After 7 a.m., they reduced to five crews.

The Red Cross arrived to help provide shelter to the people who are displaced.

At 8 a.m. Friday, traffic on Gray Highway was down to one lane, and Clinton Road was also blocked off, both due to fire crews presence.

Macon-Bibb fire crews responded to an apartment building in flames early Friday morning.

The fire started inside a building in the Cliffs apartments near Clinton Road and Gray Highway.

At 5 a.m., with the roof nearly gone, crews had been working over an hour to put out the flames.

At 5 a.m., firefighters had not yet announced what started the fire.
