Macon-Bibb leaders looking for community input on new $350 million development

Nearly 30 people gathered to share their opinions about a new $350 million development in East Macon.

MACON, Ga. — Macon-Bibb leaders are looking for ideas from the community about how to make the area thrive.

The East Bank Project has been in the works ever since the county bought the Old Bibb Mill two years ago.

In May, the county told us they're working with Atlanta-based Carter and Associates real estate firm to plan the 60-acre site on Coliseum Drive.

Now many neighbors are sharing their thoughts about what they want to see.

Vernon Roberson says he takes Coliseum Drive every day to get to the bus. He says it's time to see the area revitalized.

"More development needs to come to East Macon-Bibb," Roberson says. "It seems like East Macon gets the short end of the stick when it comes to development."

That's why local leaders gathered to hear the community's concerns and ideas on the East Bank Development.

Neighbors said they're ready for east Macon to feel some love. Some said they want more family-oriented spaces like movie theaters or restaurants. Others wanted more housing to attract young people, and they say that's what east Macon is lacking.

Alex Morrison, the County Director of Planning and Public Spaces, says East Macon is the perfect location to become a vibrant center of activity.

"We only have one chance to development this property in a way that benefits the community first and makes it a signature project that can really grow our community in a sensitive way," he said. "We wanted to have not only an expert plan team but have feedback from the community which is why we're here today to make sure we are addressing the communities needs first."

Developers say they'll take information from tonight's meeting and update some of their plans.
