Macon-Bibb Housing Authority asks for new loan to finish Tindall Heights neighborhood

The Macon-Bibb Housing Authority says the demand for low income housing in the county is so great, they can't build homes fast enough for the number of people applying. They're one step away from having enough money to pay for a new apartment complex, but they still need a loan..

Tindall Senior Towers is the first phase for the reconstruction of Tindall Heights low income housing community.

The complex is completely full at 76 units, but they have a waitlist almost double that at 75.

James Rhodes waited a year on that list. He thanks God every day for such a beautiful and affordable place to live.

“I like to cook. I love to cook, that's what I used to do before I got sick,” said Rhodes.

Four years ago, he found out discs in his spine were deteriorating and he could have become paralyzed.

Lots of surgeries and medical bills later, he still can't work.

There are still three more phases to go along with Tindall Senior Towers.

The Macon-Bibb Housing Authority director Mike Austin says the next set of apartments will open up by mid-January.

The second phase has 30 applications and a waitlist of 200 people.

“There is a real need for affordable housing in the United States and throughout Bibb County,” said Austin.

Two more phases, making 270 units total, anywhere from one to three bedrooms.

“When it's all completed, it'll represent almost $50 million of private and federal investments,” said Austin.

Austin asked Bibb County commissioners to approve of them getting a $500,000 federal grant for increased construction costs to complete the project.

They would have to pay back that loan over 15 years.

Rhodes hopes they approve of the plan. He'd get more neighbors, but says everyone deserves a nice home that they can afford.

The final vote will be on Tuesday night, but during their committee meeting commissioners on the operations and finance committee recommended to approve of the plan.
