Macon-Bibb firefighters battle second fire in just six hours

Firefighters spent early morning Wednesday putting out flames at an office building in east Macon.

MACON, Ga. — The Macon-Bibb Fire Department says they've put out a fire at a vacant east Macon office building Wednesday morning.

Crews arrived at Baconsfield Office Park off Baconsfield Drive just before 4 a.m. This is at least the second fire in just six hours they've been called to.

Firefighters say there were two men who had been staying inside the building and left as crews arrived. They say the fire started burning in a second floor room.

Crews say they were able to contain the fire to one room, but believe someone must've set the fire, because there is no power to the building at this time.

Battalion Chief Timothy Johnson has been with the fire department for 34 years and says it's been a while since it's been this busy.

"In this heat, with this amount of activity, it's taking its toll on our firefighters," Johnson said. "I'm just encouraging all of our firefighters to stay hydrated when you're working, when you're taking breaks and cooling off, and just for everybody, just staying hydrated in this heat."

They are still investigating what caused the fire.
