LAURENS COUNTY, Ga. — A Laurens County Sheriff's Captain was seriously injured in a wreck, and is now back in Georgia and improving.
Sheriff Larry Dean posted an update on Facebook on Wednesday about Captain Chris Bracewell.
Bracewell, who's worked for the department for 35 years, was hurt last month in a wreck near Valdosta. He then spent several weeks in Florida hospitals.
Dean said the captain is now recovering at the Regency Rehabilitation Hospital in Macon.
He says Bracewell can eat puree food and can drink anything he wants. He says Bracewell hasn't had to be on dialysis in a week and a half and no longer needs tubes in his nose.
The Sheriff says he's talking more and wants his phone!
While Bracewell faces a long road to recovery, Dean thanks people for their support and prayers and can't wait to have Bracewell back.
On Saturday, Oct. 14 around 7:45 a.m., the Georgia State Patrol says Bracewell was in the passenger seat as he and his brother left a hotel in Valdosta. At an intersection, they collided with another truck, leaving Captain Bracewell with serious injuries.
He was airlifted to the Shands Hospital in Gainsville, Florida for treatment.
Later, officers, sheriffs, deputies, and members of the public gathered to pray for Captain Bracewell and talk about his commitment to the community.
"He's committed," Stefan Brown, an investigator at the Laurens County Sheriff's Department, said. "He's been committed to law enforcement, he's been committed to law enforcement excellence, so I think it has an impact in this community and that shows the people that have gone through this department and going on to do great things, and stay committed, stay in place, be available, be of service.”
