Inmate found dead at Telfair State Prison, according to Georgia Department of Corrections

He died on Dec. 22.

TELFAIR COUNTY, Ga. — A man at Telfair State Prison was found dead after a fight with another inmate, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Kwesi Stultz died on Dec. 22 after a fight with inmate Kevin Shinholster. Stultz was in prison for an Aggravated Assault and a Robbery out of Gwinnett County. Stultz had a maximum release date of November 2034.

His body has been turned over to the county coroner and will be taken to the GBI crime lab to determine the exact cause of death. The Georgia Department of Corrections is investigating the death.

It comes on the heels of a number of prisoner deaths in Central Georgia.

26-year-old Maquis Johnson was stabbed at Central State Prison on Dec. 18. Only one day prior, 28-year Hollis Bryant, was stabbed multiple times Sunday at the state prison on Fulton Mill Road in Macon. 66-year-old Joseph Akins was found dead in an open area at Central State Prison on Christmas Day. At Macon State Prison in Montezuma, Tauren Hardy was killed in a fight with his cellmate on Dec. 9.

Since 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice has been probing conditions at Georgia's state prisons.

A press release from the DOJ says the investigation will "examine whether Georgia provides prisoners reasonable protection from physical harm at the hands of other prisoners."

The DOJ's Civil Rights investigation has run into road bumps, with the DOJ taking the Georgia Department of Corrections to court in 2022 claiming they failed to provide basic details and documents about how many inmates were killed in Georgia's jails.

13WMAZ will provide additional details when they are made available.
