An escaped inmate from the Smith Transitional Center in Claxton is back in custody after a high-speed chase in Monroe County.
According to a news release, deputies tried to stop a Chevrolet Equinox around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday after the driver sped past them on I-75S near mile marker 191.
The driver, identified as Talawrence Vickers, didn’t stop and a chase began.
Vickers drove off the interstate at exit 188 and continued speeding down Highway 42 towards Forsyth.
He then turned and went into the Walmart parking lot before getting out of the Equinox to run away.
Monroe County deputies and Forsyth Police searched the nearby woods and found Vickers.
He was detained and taken to the Monroe County jail where they discovered he was an escaped inmate.
He will face multiple charges, including felony fleeing/attempt to elude, possession of marijuana less than an ounce, possession of drug related objects, obstruction of an officer, giving false name and D.O.B. to law enforcement, speeding, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license.
He currently has pending charges of possession and crossing a guard line.
He was serving a 10-year sentence at Smith Transitional for robbery when he escaped more than a week ago.
