MACON, Ga. — Update 10:15 a.m.: The Bibb County School District says several witnesses reported two intruders on campus. The schools were placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution for students and staff. Several campus police officers swept the school and video evidence showed the two people leaving the campus. Campus police is working with law enforcement for potential follow up and charges for the intruders.
Update 9:16 a.m.: The lockdown has been lifted.
"URGENT: HMS/HHS lockdown has been lifted. Normal operations will resume. All students and staff are safe and the day will continue as planned. Please know we appreciate your support and understanding. A message with more details will follow shortly. "
Howard High School and Middle School was placed on emergency lockdown on Friday morning, according to a message sent out to parents on Friday morning.
The message says buses are being diverted to a safe location and they have asked students arriving through carpool to go back home until a follow up message is sent.
A spokesperson for the school system said they are unable to provide any additional details at this time.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office says they are not involved with anything happening at either school.
The message says:
“Howard High School: URGENT: Howard High and Howard Middle are on emergency lock down. No HHS/HMS students or guests will be allowed to enter or exit the buildings until lockdown is cleared. Students arriving by bus will be held on buses and diverted to an alternate location until it is safe. Arriving carpool students should return home until follow up. More to come. Please know the safety of students and staff is top priority.”
