Houston County Schools releases statement on why they chose to remain in session during severe weather

They clarified that busses will remain off the roads until the line of storms passes.

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — A line of storms moved through Central Georgia on Tuesday but the Houston County Schools District remained open and students went to school in-person.

Many parents were wondering why.

13WMAZ reached out and the Houston County School District released this statement:

"When severe weather threats arise, we continuously monitor conditions and receive regular briefings from the Houston County Emergency Management Agency and National Weather Service," the statement said.  "While schools remained in session today, we canceled all class field trips scheduled for Tuesday, January 9, and all buses were kept off the roads as the main line of severe weather came through Houston County."

They clarified that busses will remain off the roads until the line of storms passes.

Laurens County School District and Dublin City Schools both stayed open on Tuesday as well.

Bibb County, Baldwin County, Cirrus Academy, Johnson County, Macon County, Twiggs County, Washington County, and Wilkinson County all announced either a Virtual Learning Day or an asynchronous learning day.
