WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Houston County started the school year off with a bang Thursday morning during their annual Opening Session.
Superintendent Mark Scott welcomed the school system’s employees back with a musical performance by the music teachers and cheerleaders.
Scott says last year, Houston County outperformed the other Georgia school systems in 22 content areas in their End of Grade assessments.
They also presented the 2019-20 Houston County Teacher of the Year award to Matt Arthur Elementary’s Kathy Releford.
Releford, who teaches special education at the school, was stunned to say the least.
“I am amazed, shocked and humbled. I really am. I get to go to work and do everything that I want to do all day which is love on our babies,” she said.
The faculty and staff spent the remainder of the morning looking ahead to the new school year and they say they want to do what is best for the students despite constant change and challenges.
