BONAIRE, Ga. — It's only a few months until the new Bonaire Primary School opens, and Bonaire Elementary School teacher Samantha Moinipour can't wait.
"It just shows that there's been a lot of growth in this area, and as a Pre-K teacher it just shows that we're going to have more room to serve students that age," Moinipour said.
She's also making the transition as a parent.
"I personally will have children at both Bonaire Primary and Bonaire Elementary, and I'm very confident that they will be well taken care of," she said.
Her family is involved with the district's proposed rezoning that would affect three nearby elementary schools: Matt Arthur, Hilltop, and Bonaire.
"90% of the families will remain in their current attendance zone for these three elementary schools," Houston County Superintendent Mark Scott said.
Superintendent Mark Scott says their biggest priority was moving the fewest number of families.
For the 10% who are affected, he explains how it will work.
"There's some neighborhoods behind Bonaire Elementary School that go to Hilltop Elementary, and we felt like it made more sense for those parents to be able to go directly to the Bonaire attendance zone," Scott said.
Matt Arthur is the district's second-largest elementary school.
The freed space at Hilltop will relieve the northwest side of the Matt Arthur zone, and the eastern side will move into the Bonaire zone.
"Currently our Bonaire attendance zone is cut off there north of Veterans, and now it'll go all the way down to 127," Scott said.
Despite all the changes coming soon, Moinipour says it's necessary due to Bonaire's steady population growth.
"I think it's important that all of us remember that the county's number one priority is the students and meeting their needs," she said.
The district invites all parents to attend their rezoning plan meeting in the Veterans High School auditorium Thursday at 6 p.m.
They will answer all questions and address any thoughts or concerns.
Superintendent Scott says population growth, new construction, and school traffic routes are major factors in rezoning plans.
