HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — Houston County parents can request a school transfer for their child thanks to a bill approved by the Georgia General Assembly.
House Bill 251 lets parents request a spot for their child at any school within their district based on the school’s availability.
According to a release from the director of community and school affairs at the Houston County Board of Education, parents and guardians will be able to make a school transfer request by filling out a form, which can be found on the Board of Education’s website or at any school.
All middle and high schools are at capacity, but nine elementary schools have currently have availability:
- Centerville Elementary School
- King's Chapel Elementary School
- Langston Road Elementary School
- Lindsey Elementary School
- Miller Elementary School
- Morningside Elementary School
- Northside Elementary School
- Russell Elementary School
- Shirley Hills Elementary School
The release says a finalized list of schools with space will be released by August 14.
The bill says parents who transfer their child to a different school are required to be responsible for their transportation.
Applications must be sent out by Aug. 20 and approval is first come, first serve. Families will find out if they are approved or denied by August 27.
Students will start out the school year at the school they are zoned to attend, then approved transfers will take effect by Sept. 3, according to the release.
Schools are not accepting request forms, so transfer applications must be mailed to the assistant superintendent for school operations, Richard Rogers.
The address is Houston County Board of Education, P.O. Box 1850, Perry, Georgia, 31069.
More information about the bill is posted on the education board's website under the 'parents' tab.
