PERRY, Ga. — Houston County Schools is celebrating its newest school in Perry.
Last week, Houston County Schools held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new primary school.
Since opening at the beginning of the school year, Langston Road Primary School is the new school on the block and already has 540 students enrolled from Pre-K to 2nd grade.
It was built less than a mile from the Langston Road Elementary School.
Kelly Rush, principal at Langston Road Primary School, said moving from the elementary school to the primary school was an easy transition. Local families also had the chance to watch the school being built from the ground up.
"Here we are," Rush said. "Here's Langston Road Primary School and we're ready to take on the town. Establishing a new school here in Perry is perfect because the growth is coming."
As the kids learn their ABCs, Rush also talked about what the kids learn from Pre-K through 2nd grade that prepares them for the rest of elementary school.
"It's a foundation," Rush said."We start the kids in pre-k here at school so we're building the foundation of reading and math, and we get them started and get them well prepared so that way as they grow through the grades they're ready to take on third and fifth grade."
Melissa Lee is a mother to a 1st grader and a child in Pre-K. She and her family moved out to Perry after hearing about Langston Road Elementary. Now, they have one primary school that caters to her two kids and she said their transition was easy.
"The elementary being so close by, we actually got to experience it and actually see the school being built," Lee said. "It's really close by so sometimes we would just drive by and watch the construction workers work on it."
The school is hoping to provide more opportunities for kids to develop, as the city of Perry grows along with the Houston County School District.
"Constantly kids are moving into this area and we welcome them with open arms and we've got the room since we're a brand new school," Rush said.
Langston Road Primary School is located at 325 Langston Road in Perry. It's a fully constructed one hundred thousand square foot building that was funded by the 2022 Education SPLOST of about $27 million.
