Houston County neighbors recall search for escaped inmates

The typically sleepy neighborhood was shaken awake by the sounds of SWAT teams.

Most residents in the Oliver Place neighborhood say it is a peaceful, relaxed area, but Monday night, that was not the case.

The typically sleepy neighborhood was shaken awake by the sounds of SWAT teams.

The Oliver Place Apartments neighborhood near Gray Road in Houston County spent several hours Monday night as ground zero of the search for escaped inmate Shane Saip, and as armed police officers swarmed the neighborhood where Dezmon Hall's family lives, he couldn't be there for them.

"Actually, I was in Albany working, and my girlfriend called me and told me what was going on, and I was scared from then on because, you know, I was an hour and 30 minutes away, and they were right here in the middle all of it," said Hall.

Dezmon has 3 young kids and says while he was at work, he spent all night thinking about them.

Meanwhile, Gwendolyn Edwards was worried about her own little ones. She lives just off Keith Drive and had her 15-month-old great granddaughter staying with her when she heard what was going on.

"They described him, they said do not approach him or anything like that, so I was like, I got up and hurried and turned the alarm on then," said Edwards.

But Edwards says even though the noise kept her up most of the night, she felt like authorities had the situation under control. "I felt pretty safe with the helicopter and all the cops hanging around."

And as for Dezmon, even though the wait was torture, he says getting home and finding his family safe almost makes up for it.

"You know, I had to run down and see what everything going on and make sure everything good with them -- you know, hug my babies, kiss my babies. I'm just blessed man, blessed. That's all I can say," Hall said.

One woman didn't want to go on camera, but said after what happened last night, she'll be looking for a new place to live. As for Gwen, she says she's not going anywhere, and Dezmon says he's just looking forward to things getting back to normal.

Both inmates were captured by 11 a.m. Tuesday morning.
