HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at Union Baptist Church in Warner Robins was full of singing, dancing and census information.
Rutha Jackson, the Houston County NAACP president, said it's the perfect place to talk to people about the importance of being counted.
"The census is going to enhance your life. It is going to put money in your pocket, so to speak," she said.
Everything from political representation to how much government grant or aid money comes in depends on the census.
She said getting counted will benefit the community for years to come.
"Your children will benefit from it if we do what we are supposed to do, and that's count everybody in your household," said Jackson.
They handed out pamphlets and played videos explaining how the process works.
"It kind of takes the fear away because when it asks you a question you usually say, 'Well, what all does this entail?' Well, that paper that we handed out this morning, it explains each question," she said.
Even Rev. Dr. Daryl Vining emphasized how important it is in his message.
"Put everybody in. Count all of them," said Vining.
Jackson said they will have three laptops at their headquarters at 213 Suzanne Drive, so people have access to internet to fill out the questionnaire.
They will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
In the last census count back in 2010, Georgia counted close to 10 million people living in the state.
