Helicopter dispatched to fight fire in Houston County, fire chief says

They say it happened near Lake Joy. The helicopter used water from the lake to fight the fire.

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — A small tree fire in Houston County led to a big scene Friday morning, according to witnesses in the area.

A helicopter from Georgia Forestry was dumping water from Lake Joy on a single tree that caught on fire. That’s according to Houston County Fire Chief Christopher Stoner.

He says the fire was in the backyard of a private home on North Lake Drive.

While Stoner says the fire was small, the fire’s close proximity to Lake Joy Road made it very visible since many people saw as the helicopter dumped buckets of water on the fire from the road.

He says they received around 30 calls from curious onlookers.

According to onlookers, the helicopter grabbed water from Lake Joy and then dumped over the fire.

But because the fire is located in a hard-to-get spot, the small fire called for a big response from Georgia Forestry, with them sending a helicopter to put out the flames.

Stoner says the fire has since been put out. Because Georgia Forestry handled the fire, he says he does not know what caused the fire.

Georgia Forestry is overseeing the fire investigation.

Despite fighting the flames from the air, Stoner says that the fire was “uneventful” despite its visibility.
