SOUTH FULTON, Ga. — Update: The gun recovered at the middle school was from a child of one of the school's officers, South Fulton Police Department confirmed.
________
A gun was recovered at a middle school in South Fulton Wednesday, a spokesperson for Fulton County Schools said.
Renaissance Middle School, which is off Hall Road, was put under a hard lockdown as a "precautionary measure."
"There was no active threat, and the hard lockdown has since been lifted," the school district said.
A letter was sent out to parents and guardians from the school's principal, which provided more details about what happened.
In the letter, Principal Ava Williams said a student had reported to an adult about seeing another student with the weapon on the school's grounds.
"During their investigation, Fulton County Police officers questioned several students and found a weapon which they quickly confiscated," the letter stated.
The principal said the school was also swept.
"This is an extremely serious occurrence, and this behavior will not be tolerated. Any situation potentially endangering the safety of our school community will be handled quickly and judiciously, including a discipline hearing and possibly criminal charges for the responsible parties," Principal Williams wrote.
The principal added this type of incident is rare for the middle school.
"Safety and student achievement remain our highest priorities and we will continue to do everything possible to keep our school a safe place for your child," the letter said.
