CRAWFORD COUNTY, Georgia — A Crawford County deputy was killed in a crash on Marshall Mill Road on Tuesday night while responding to a call, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
40-year-old Tim Rivers was driving south but crossed the centerline into the northbound lane and into the path of another vehicle. The crash happened just before 10:15 p.m. He was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The other driver's name is being withheld at this time is currently being treated for their injuries, according to a release from Crawford County Sheriff Lewis Walker.
Sheriff Walker says Rivers was helping another deputy who was performing a traffic stop. Rivers had been with the department for two years and was a good worker that they enjoyed having. He leaves behind two kids and a fiancé.
Walker says their people go through training and know the risks that come with the job, but they’re human, and sometimes nothing can prepare you for tragedies like this.
Rivers ran for Sheriff in Bibb County in 2016 and was a Bibb County resident. During his campaign for Bibb County Sheriff, he filed a federal lawsuit against Sheriff David Davis. He claimed that he was the victim of racial discrimination. The lawsuit was later thrown out.
The body will be sent to the G.B.I. Crime Lab for an autopsy to determine to the cause of death.
The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) is investigating the crash.
