Residents frustrated as original owners are reinstated at Green Meadows townhomes in Macon

In August 2023, a Bibb County judge approved the installation of a county-appointed receiver. On Monday, the state court ruled in favor of the property's owners.

MACON, Ga. — It's back to square one at West Macon's Green Meadows townhomes.

The county went to court last year to declare the complex a public nuisance due to crime.

The county said it was a dangerous complex, claiming they'd logged more than 100 shootings and nearly 600 shots fired in a year.

On Monday, the Georgia Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the property's original management who will now regain ownership of the property.

This leaves residents at the complex experiencing a sudden change in management once again.

"You don't know who has ownership. You don't know who is in control of anything," a Green Meadows resident said. "If the previous owners had lost it because of how they were maintaining it and they're going to give it back to them, it's going to be in the same situation or get even worse."

In August 2023, a Bibb County judge approved the installation of a county-appointed receiver.

Now, the Court of Appeals says that the change to city-appointed management was unlawful and failed to honor the apartment complex's owners' due process rights.

The county issued a statement in response to the decision, saying they are discussing all options and taking every step to improve public safety.

The resident we spoke with who wants to remain anonymous, says she does not expect much change with the original management back in charge.

"It won't make a difference in regards to whether the city owns it or the original company owns it. If there's still a crime issue, it doesn't matter how you paint the buildings. If they're not taking control over the crime, then there's no change," the resident said. "I think they need to have more concerned community police involvement out here. They need to be more community-focused instead of money-focused out here."

The case is now back in Bibb County Court for review.
