A former band director for Jones County High School will spend the next three years in state prison for having a sexual relationship with a student.
According to Stephen Bradley, the interim district attorney for the Ocmulgee Circuit, Cory Tanner pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault on a student. He said Judge Hugh Winfield sentenced Tanner to three years in prison and 12 on probation.
WMAZ reported school officials learning of the relationship in September and reported the matter to Jones County investigators. The girl involved was a juvenile under 17.
Bradley said Wednesday that quick work by school officials helped to resolve the case.
"We're glad that folks in Jones County Schools were paying close attention to the student and were able to realize what had happened," he said.
Bradley said he met with the victim's family who approved of the plea agreement.
