Gray Bypass opens to reduce traffic in Jones County

After 20 years of planning, the Gray Bypass opened Thursday.

We found out how it will affect travelers in Jones County.

With the opening of the bypass, large trucks moving through downtown Gray may become history.

The 6-mile bypass begins at State Route 18, west of Gray, and travels north around the city, connecting on the east side at State Route 22.

We timed how long it took to drive through Gray to US 129, like one was headed out to Eatonton.

It took 7.5 minutes with stoplights and traffic in downtown Gray.

Traveling to the same highway on the bypass only took 5 minutes and there were no stops.

So, if you're tired of seeing trucks in the downtown area, or you're looking for a faster route to get up to Athens and see the Dawgs, the Gray Bypass will help travelers driving through Jones County.

The bypass cost more than $42 million and opened 6 months ahead of schedule.
