'To play comfortably': Houston County country club holds fundraiser for inclusive playground

The "Drive Home Happy" Golf Tournament at the Houston Lake Country Club is raising funds to build an inclusive playground project for kids living with disabilities.

PERRY, Ga. — Summer might be over, but kids are still having fun at local parks across Central Georgia.

Yet, one mom says, there's not a fully-inclusive space for kids living with disabilities.

Avoly Wainwright's on a mission to get the ball rolling for kids like hers.

"This playground project is for so many families like ours," Wainwright said.

Since launching the project, the Houston Lake Country Club has raised about $400K of their $900K goal.

The "Drive Home Happy" Golf Tournament on Thursday, Aug. 15 will help raise funds for the playground project. It's sponsored by Lowe Toyota and hosted by the Haseya Women's Club.

For families like Wainwright's, inclusivity is important-- especially for kids living with disabilities.

At 16 months old, her son Haines suffered a brain injury.

Now, he lives with some weakness on his left side, but he still loves to get outside to play.

However, there are not many fully inclusive places around Central Georgia for kids like Haines.

So the Haseya Women's Club, and their supporters, are working toward making a playground for everyone to enjoy.

"Our playground is going to be completely inclusive," Wainwright said.

People in wheelchairs, who use communication devices, and who are on the autism spectrum can come "to play comfortably on this playground," she said.

The playground's site should be on Langston Road behind The Grove Church between Perry and Kathleen. Wainwright said the City of Perry approved the land for the playground and will also handle creating and upkeeping the bathroom facilities.

"Our club will essentially be donating the playground to the city, who will maintain the upkeep of it, so we're very happy about that," Wainwright said.

The playground is being created for kids with disabilities, but Wainwright says kids of any ability level can enjoy it, too.
