Girl stabbed at Twiggs County High School

A girl is in stable condition after being stabbed at Twiggs County High School.

Supt. Elgin Dixon said a second girl was taken into custody by campus police.

"We did have an incident. Everything is under control," he said.

Dixon said the victim was taken to a Macon hospital.

He declined to comment further, saying he expects to release more details later Wednesday.

J.T. Ricketson of the GBI's Perry office says they were asked to investigate by the Twiggs County Sheriff's Office.

Ricketson says the 17-year-old student was stabbed in the upper torso with a kitchen-style knife. The suspect is 15 years old and is charged with having a weapon on campus and aggravated assault.

Ricketson said the stabbing happened after the two girls fought in a hallway, and the victim's injuries are serious.

Beverly Jordan received a shocking text from her daughter Tuesday morning.

"Well, she texted me about 9:45, telling me someone got stabbed and she wanted to come home," says Jordan.

Jordan said she hurried to the school, but when she arrived, "They said I couldn't get her until the lockdown was off," says Jordan.

Her daughter, Destinee Cooper, says she was walking down the hallway and saw two girls fighting.

"And the girl was screaming, laying on the ground, and the teacher said, 'You can't be moving,' and stuff, and was holding her," says Cooper.

Superintendent Elgin Dixon said that the attacker was taken into custody and school officials handled the case quickly.

"Resource officers and staff acted quickly and decisively to secure the safety of all students," said Cooper. "All schools and facilities are secure and the student body at large is safe."

The girl who was injured is in serious but stable condition.
