ATHENS, Ga. -- More than 15,000 people viewed the total solar eclipse at the University of Georgia's Sanford Stadium on Monday.
The school opened the doors to its stadium for an "eclipse" blackout. The first 10,000 people received a free pair of eclipse glasses. Those who weren't able to obtain the glasses could view the eclipse live on the stadium's Jumbotron.
Organizers said they didn't expect that large of a crowd, but there was plenty of room.
"We thought 5,000 would be a minimum but we got closer to 15,000," said Marshall Shepard. "We had 10,000 glasses and we gave them out."
It took about six months to plan the event, which was sponsored by the Georgia Athletic Association, the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the Atmospheric Science Program and the Department of Geography.
