Georgia Supreme Court upholds Georgia Heartbeat Law. Here's what that law does

A Fulton County Judge ruled the ban was invalid since it was passed before Roe v. Wade was overturned, but the state supreme court rejected that decision.

MACON, Ga. — On Tuesday, the Georgia Supreme Court upheld the state's ban on abortions after about six weeks from conception.

Previously, a Fulton County Judge ruled the ban was invalid since it was passed before Roe v. Wade was overturned.

Now, the state supreme court rejected that decision, and they reinstated the ban while considering the case.

Director of Kolbe Center Ann Beall said she was happy to hear the news.

"We are encouraged to know that our heartbeat bill is one step closer to being fully in effect," Beall said.

Kolbe Center is a pregnancy resource center that encourages families to choose birth over abortion.

"We work with moms to make sure that they have all the facts, that they know what their options are. Oftentimes, parenting is what they really wanna do and they're just scared,"  Beall said.

When Lynn Snyder heard the news that Georgia's Supreme Court upheld the heartbeat law, she had a different reaction.

"It's very disturbing. I had a little glimmer of hope that the courts would see that women's issues are health care issues," Snyder said.

Snyder is a retired nurse, who helped to found a women's rights group, 'Georgia Women (and Those Who Stand with Us)'.

"They're pro-life, but if you are really pro, what I call it, pro-birth," Synder said. "If you're pro-life, you're doing everything possible to make sure that women have enough health care."

Beall said her group tries to do that every day, but through supporting moms through pregnancy. They provide clothes, diapers, car seats and other resources to local families who need help.

"We work with mammas from, conception until they've- until their babies are toddlers and older," Beall said.

She said she won't stop fighting for the rights of the unborn. Snyder said she also won't stop her activism anytime soon.

"We're fighting an uphill battle, but we're not gonna stop fighting," Snyder said.

Then ban on abortions does include certain exceptions for rape and incest, as long as a police report was filed. For abortions past that 6-week period, exceptions can be granted if the mother's life is at risk or a serious medical condition makes a fetus unviable.
