Georgia State Patrol trooper says Milledgeville mud bogging accident was 'unusual'

Investigators say the accident happened when the truck's accelerator failed.

The Georgia State Patrol said it's investigating whether modifications made to a mud-bogging vehicle caused Saturday's accident that killed two boys.

The owner told 13WMAZ we couldn't go inside to see the track, but Baldwin County coroner John Gonzales confirmed a truck ran off an embankment and landed on three kids playing on the side of the track.

Two of the boys died--brothers Ryan, 14, and Justin Moore,10.

Gonzales said the autopsy shows they died due to blunt force trauma.

He said it was one of the most horrific cases he's had to work.

That is why the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office has asked Georgia State Patrol to investigate.

Georgia State Patrol trooper Tyler Easter was the first trooper to the scene.

Easter said the accident happened when the truck's accelerator failed.

Easter said they're investigating whether that was caused by mudbogging modifications to the truck, because the wreck was so unusual.

"Failures are encountered, however failures to this severity are not common to my knowledge. This particular thing is a mechanical failure, which caused the person to lose control of the vehicle, as opposed to it just not moving," Easter said.

The third boy, Zach Holloway, 11, is receiving treatment at Navicent Health, according to spokesperson Megan Allen.

Allen said the boy is listed in serious condition.

There is a GoFundMe page for the Holloway and Moore families. So far they have raised over $5,000.

State Patrol Sergeant David Holland identified the truck driver as Tommy Howell of McRae. No charges have been filed.
