Georgia National Fair breaks ground for new birthing center

Fair attendees will be able to watch live animal births at the new center.

The Georgia National Fair Board along with the Georgia Department of Agriculture broke ground Wednesday for their new Baby Barn.

The center will feature live births from cows and pigs, and spectators will be able to name the new babies.

The barn will be a new annex to the Georgia Grown building at the fairgrounds.

Georgia Grown is a Department of Agriculture program dedicated to economic development and marketing for agriculture in Georgia.

They said they plan to notify the public when a birth is about to take place.

“Timing will be essential, but we will try to push alerts over social media to tell you to be here for that event,” said Jack Spruill, Director of Marketing for Georgia Grown. “If you do miss it, you can at least come by and see the new born baby, literally minutes old.”

According to Spruill, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and the Georgia National Fair Board came up with the idea after visiting a similar facility at the Minnesota State Fair.

Spruill said these centers are becoming more important as new generations move away from farming.

“People don’t have the experience of being able to witness the true miracle that is the birthing process,” Spruill said. “It gives them the opportunity to witness for themselves something that most farm people take for granted.”

The new Baby Barn will open during the 2018 Georgia National Fair in October.
