Georgia Military College president to step down after successor is appointed

Lieutenant General William Caldwell IV took over as GMC’s president in 2013, after a 37-year career in the United States Army.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Lieutenant General William Caldwell IV - the 21st president of Georgia Military College - has announced his plans to step down from his position as president, per a release from the school.

“I am so grateful for this season of life, and all the opportunities we have had together to impact the lives of our students,” Caldwell said. “Working with this team of dedicated, talented, and committed servant leaders has made this time together so special. This GMC team is the absolute best. They are second to none. Thanks for allowing me to have been ‘All In’ with each of you and your families.”

Caldwell started as GMC’s president in 2013, after a 37-year career in the United States Army. During his tenure, the graduation rate of the junior college increased by nearly 10%, the number of degrees offered increased by 32% and the Preparatory School graduated its 15th-straight senior class with a 100% graduation rate.

He has also had a positive impact on the school’s financial dealings. When Caldwell stepped into the role of president in 2013, the GMC Foundation’s net assets totaled just over $11 million. Now, 11 years later, those assets have more than quadrupled and sit at $47 million.

“Georgia Military College is unique, and each President that has been privileged to serve this great institution has had the unique opportunity to take the college through a different challenge,” Chairman George Hogan said. “General Caldwell did a phenomenal job growing the school’s enrollments, expanding opportunities for students, ensuring the focus on student success, and providing new academic offerings while reestablishing GMC’s forward-facing brand as a leadership academy.”

Per the statement, Caldwell plans to continue his philanthropic work after he steps down. The college says they are searching across the nation for his replacement.

They say the start date of the next President of GMC will be determined based on the availability of the incumbent, considering any potential military obligations that person may have. Caldwell has agreed to structure his transition date around the start date of his successor.
