MACON, Ga. — A 39-year-old man is dead after a crash that has shut down parts of I-475 north at the Zebulon Road overpass, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
Witnesses reported that a Kenworth construction vehicle was going up I-475 when the mounted drill of the vehicle was extended upwards. The driver tried to go under the Zebulon Road overpass when the drill hit the bridge.
An hour after the announcement of his death was first made, the sheriff's office identified the man as Stephen Perry Croft II, who as driving the construction vehicle at the time of the crash. His next of kin has been notified.
The vehicle overturned and the Croft was later pulled from the crash and treated at the scene. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Three other vehicles were damaged by the debris from the crash, but no one else was injured in the crash.
Two lanes are still closed. "We have a foreman going out there now and we have notified our bridge group. We know the fence has been damaged at this time. As far as other damage we will wait on the bridge team assessment," according to Gina Snider with the Georgia Department of Transportation.
