Georgia State Patrol investigating deadly Houston County crash

The crash happened just after midnight Sunday at the intersection of the Highway 247 Spur and Highway 11.

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — A driver is dead after an early morning crash Sunday near Highway 247 Spur's intersection with Highway 11 in Houston County.

He was identified as Nathan Thompson by Hawkinsville High School. He was a coach and teacher.

The Georgia State Patrol says someone was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck south on 247 just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday, but did not stop at the stop sign at Highway 11. Instead, GSP says, the truck went through the stop sign, across Highway 11, and into the trees on the other side of the road.

According to a GSP news release, the truck went "several feet" into the woods before hitting a tree with its front bumper. The truck eventually caught fire, which trapped the driver inside.

The Georgia State Patrol says the driver died from their injuries.
