MACON, Ga. — If you drive through downtown Macon, you may wonder when the construction will finally end.
As you're driving south on Second Street, you'll come across dozens of cones on your right. You may see some cars parked while contractors are at work, too.
"We're 65% complete, approximately," Gina Snider from GDOT said. "But, that can change."
Most of the work has been completed since 2021, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The state expects construction on Second Street to finish by the end of this year.
The construction happening on the Second Street bridge is a part of the I-75/I-16 project.
Snider said it's meant to improve access to travelers.
In June, GDOT explained how the project will improve driving conditions.
"Basically, we started this whole entire project because of better mobility for all the trucks traveling through to the Savannah area, from the ports, to come through to Macon, which is a major metropolitan area of our state," Snider explained.
Right now, the project is in its fourth and fifth phases. That includes stages 1 and 2 of the Second Street bridge construction, according to Snider.
"It needed updating," Snider explained.
She said the state expects contractors to complete both stages by the end of this year.
Contractors are completing the superstructures, which include the road and bridge.
The second and final stage should complete the substructures by this winter.
That includes "the completion of sidewalks, a concrete median, a barrier wall, fencing, new striping, traffic signals can be upgraded," Snider.
GDOT urges you to drive alert and arrive alive; construction workers are on the roads at various hours of the day and night across the state.
