TWIGGS COUNTY, Ga. — Update, 2:35 p.m.
GBI Special Agent in Charge J.T. Ricketson says around 11:15 a.m., a Georgia State Patrol trooper was driving an unmarked car on Georgia 57 east in the right lane.
That's when a white pickup truck sideswiped the trooper on the driver-side door and sped away, Ricketson says.
The trooper chased the truck for a couple miles, and the chase ended with a crash in the median of the highway.
Ricketson says the trooper got out of his car and fired multiple rounds after seeing the man had a weapon.
“The trooper was able to get out of the vehicle, the subject in the car had a weapon. The trooper fired multiple rounds—and I won’t go into the exact rounds—but he fired rounds. The subject was struck at least one time in their arm and hand area,” Ricketson said.
The suspect was hit in the arm and has non-life-threatening injuries.
Ricketson says they believe the man had some sort of gun and also fired at the trooper, but whether or not the subject fired a weapon is still under investigation.
“I sent my crime scene specialists up with a helicopter to get the initial contact location and then they videoed the route up to the final crash scene,” said Ricketson.
He says the suspect is a 38-year-old man with a Wilkinson County address, and they're securing search warrants for thim, but they're not releasing his name yet. He could be facing hit and run, aggravated assault on a Peace Officer, and other charges, according to Ricketson.
“Again, you had deadly force with a vehicle, which was used against this trooper in this incident.”
