FORT VALLEY, Ga. — Fort Valley State University has named a new football coach more than a month after firing previous head coach Kevin Porter.

According to a news release from the school, they've decided to hire Maurice Flowers to the football program's top spot.

They say Flowers brings more than 20 years of coaching experience, which includes jobs at Fayetteville State University, Miles College, Mississippi Valley State University, and Shaw University.

While coach at Mississippi Valley, Flowers improved the offense's scoring average, total yards per game and rush yards per game, says FVSU.

Before he went to MVSU, he served as offensive coordinator at Fayetteville State and had one of the top offenses in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, averaging 34 points per game.

“We’re looking forward to Coach Flowers helping to inspire our players as he leads the Wildcats to the next level of success,” said FVSU president Paul Jones. “He’ll make a great addition to our Wildcat Family.”

Flowers will start at FVSU on Jan. 2, 2020. A press conference is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 10, 2020 at 10 a.m.
