Here's what Dublin's free resource center does to address community needs

The Katherine W. Gray Resource Center opened last November, and they've had weekly events with different resource groups since.

DUBLIN, Ga. — In Dublin, one resource center is trying to get the word out that they're open and ready to serve the public.

The Katherine W. Gray Resource Center opened last November, and they've had weekly events with different resource groups since.

Laurens County's Oconee Regional Library hosts a pop-up library there once a month. On Wednesday, Cristina Trotter was there with the library.

"If they don't have transportation that might be difficult to get to the library. But here, they could just walk here, and request a library card, check out books, we have public computers," Trotter said.

The library employees host story times and do arts and crafts with the kids. They also help adults with technology assistance.

"I'm here to help people on the public computers. Help people apply for jobs, help you apply for benefits or whatever- any sort of help you need on the computers, that's why we are here," Trotter said.

Dionne Clark stopped by with her daughter Re'niayh Hall.

She said they both loved the experience. Her daughter got to make a craft that was connected to the Dr. Seuss book from their story time. Clark said experiences like these have helped her daughter grow a love for reading on her own.

"I think it gave her a step closer, wanting to read a book," Clark said.

The resource center doesn't stop there. They also have free blood pressure and blood sugar checks daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They partner with organizations that offer free COVID-19 and flu vaccines. They have a free clothing closet, that they're currently accepting donations for.

They're also getting ready to host a seminar on April 11 at the center that covers black maternal health. It's in partnership with Fairview Park Hospital and Southside Community Association.

The seminar will be taught by OB/GYN's, mid-level practitioners and a midwife. They'll go over maternal health, teach about prenatal and postnatal care, and what risks or symptoms to watch out for after leaving the hospital.

"We find that when mom's health is best, they're also the best for their babies. And so we're excited to offer that education in hopes that they learn," Director of Marketing and Communications for Fairview Park Hospital Liz Green said.

The hospital will have a pre-registration event on Saturday, March 30 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 pm. at Oconee Regional Gym. They will serve a free hotdog lunch. You can also pre-register at this link.

The health seminar is April 11 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Katherine W. Gray Resource Center. There will be a free dinner for pre-registered attendees, which is encouraged, although you can still attend if you aren't pre-registered. Activities will be provided for children who attend.

The Katherine W. Gray Resource Center is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

You can find a list of their future events below, and by following them on Facebook.
